Dr. Eduardo G. de Campos

Education:

  • Ph.D., Chemistry, University of Sao Paulo (Brazil), 2020, with a doctoral internship at the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education (Willow Grove, PA), 2018 - 2019
    • Mentors: Dr. Bruno S. De Martinis (Brazil) and Dr. Barry K. Logan (United States)
    • His research involved the development of analytical methods by GC-MS, LC-MS/MS or LC-QTOF to study novel drugs of abuse, including novel psychoactive substances (NPS) and 2,4-dinitrophenol, in dried blood spots, blood or urine. He also studied the in vitro the metabolism of NPS belonging to the class of synthetic cathinones using human liver microsomes and LC-QTOF. His research was developed at the University of Sao Paulo (in Brazil) and at the Center for Forensic Science research and Education (in the United States).
  • M.S., Chemistry, University of Sao Paulo (Brazil), 2016
    • Mentor: Dr. Bruno S. De Martinis - His research involved the use of zebrafish as new alternative model in Forensic Toxicology to study the drug ketamine, combining behavioral analysis, multivariate statistics and GC-MS.
  • B.S., Chemistry with Major in Forensic Chemistry, University of Sao Paulo (Brazil), 2013
    • Mentor: Dr. Bruno S. De Martinis

Professional Experience:

  • Dr. Eduardo de Campos joined Appalachian State University in January 2022 as an Assistant Professor.
  • Chair, Young Toxicologists Committee of the Brazilian Society of Toxicology (SBTox), 2020 - current
  • Second Treasurer, Brazilian Society of Toxicology (SBTox), 2020 - current
  • Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Campinas (Brazil), 2021
    • Mentor: Dr. Jose Luiz da Costa
    • His postdoctoral research focused on the data analysis of the occurrence of NPS in Brazil in seized materials, clinical cases at the Campinas Poison Control Center and literature reports.
  • Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Sao Paulo (Brazil), 2021
    • Mentor: Dr. Elaine P. De Martinis
    • His postdoctoral research involved the in silico study of the microbial metabolism of NPS in wastewater and the in silico investigation of the occurrence of the cocaine esterase genes in global wastewater metagenomes to assess the functional potential of the microbiome in metabolizing cocaine and similar drugs in wastewater.

Research/Interests:

The research of Dr. De Campos is in the fields of Forensic Toxicology and Chemistry, with focus on the analysis of illicit drugs and novel psychoactive substances (NPS) in different types of matrices. The emergence of the NPS is a current challenge in Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology laboratories and exploring the development of novel analytical strategies to detect and identify these compounds is of paramount importance. His current research interests involve the development and validation of novel analytical methods for the determination of NPS and “traditional” illicit drugs in biological matrices (such as blood, urine, oral fluid, vitreous humor and others), exploring new sample preparation methods and techniques such as GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, LC-MS/MS or LC-HRMS. He is also interested in the characterization of NPS in seized materials using multiple analytical techniques, such as GC-MS, FTIR and NMR. More recently, he has been also interested in the analysis of illicit drugs and NPS in wastewater. Dr. De Campos is also interested in in silico/in vitro studies of human or microbial metabolism of NPS and other illicit drugs and its implications for the analysis of biological specimens or wastewater. Students interested in working in the laboratory of Dr. De Campos are encouraged to contact him by email.
