Kathy Crutchfield Memorial Fund Sponsored Fermentation Analytical Lab Assistant

The Kathy Crutchfield Memorial Fund was set up to support underrepresented students in Fermentation Sciences in an effort to promote diversity in the field of study. This fund that is supported by a partnership with Lost Province Brewing Co. will provide a stipend for a student to work in the Fermentation Sciences service lab.  We encourage you to learn more about the Kathy Crutchfield Memorial Fund, by reading the article “Lost Province teams up with Appalachian State University’s Fermentation Sciences: The Kathy Crutchfield Memorial Fund” published by the High Country Press.  

The Fermentation Sciences service lab provides analytical testing for the fermented beverage industry and supports research in the fermentation sciences.  The mission of this service is to support the production of consistent, high-quality products by providing analytical services coupled with technical assistance to growers and producers.

The Analytical Lab Assistant position offers flexible hours that will work around your class schedule. The selected applicant will learn how to perform analytical analyses for the lab, including but not limited to:

  • Colorimetric and enzymatic assays
  • GC and LC analysis
  • Specialized beverage analytical instrumentation
  • Titrations
  • Yeast and Bacterial Culturing

The applicant will also help maintain the Fermentation Sciences facility, which will include cleaning floors, dishes, organizing, setting up, and putting away materials for labs, CIP cleaning brewing, and distillation equipment.
