The recent paper of Dr. Bob Swarthout, Associate Professor in the department, on the impacts and possible sources of the 2019 Brazil mystery oil spill made the cover of the November issue of Energy and Fuels, a journal of the American Chemical Society. The spill contaminated over 3000 km of the NE Brazil coastline and was considered the worst oil spill in the country's history. The results from detailed chromatographic, isotopic, and mass spectral analyses of field samples revealed that the mysterious source was not a crude oil and rather a mixture of, at least, two refined products.
